Our Beginnings

Bleak House Ltd offer a uniquely family driven service. The directors of Bleak House Limited strive to and are determined to maintain our individuality into the future, for that is what sets us apart from larger more corporate companies.

The promotion of a family atmosphere and a feeling of inclusion and unity for all of the people who live and work there were the core principles.

Bleak House opened as a Residential Care Home in 1985 when the then proprietor and founder, Sheila Turley, a Ward Sister at Winestead Hospital and a fully qualified Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH), purchased the property in order to start the business that has now become Bleak House Limited, the first privately run Residential Care Home in the Holderness area catering for adults with a learning disability.

Sheila’s vision for Bleak House was clear; to make the home a place where the promotion of a family atmosphere and a feeling of inclusion and unity for all of the people who live and work there were the core principles. Today, her legacy goes on and Chris Allan, Steve Turley and Sue Harris (all sons and daughters of Sheila) remain actively involved in the day to day management and care provision keeping Bleak House a family run care home and in 2015 it celebrated its thirtieth year anniversary!
